Should Cody Rhodes finish the story at WrestleMania?

The wrestling universe has made their frustration known. For the last two days, the hashtag #WeWantCody has trended worldwide on X, formerly known as Twitter.

On this week’s “Friday Night Smackdown”, WWE held a segment between The Undisputed Universal Champion Roman Reigns and The “American Nightmare” Cody Rhodes.

Many WWE fans expected Rhodes to announce that he would “finish the story” following a monumental moment that was ripped from him at WrestleMania 39 in Hollywood last year.

Rhodes was also the winner of this year’s Royal Rumble, which is supposed to guarantee him a main event match at WrestleMania 40.

The “finish the story” storyline is based on Rhodes winning the one championship that his late father, Dusty Rhodes, never won: the WWE Championship, now called the WWE Undisputed Universal Championship.

However, it seems that Rhodes’ dreams may not come true after all.

During the Friday Night Smackdown segment, Rhodes briefly mentioned that his match with Roman may not be at Mania, shortly before the music hit for Movie Star and WWE Legend “The Rock.”

While the fans in the arena seemed more than pleased by his appearance, what would follow on social media was the complete opposite.

The Rock Vs. Roman stare down became WWE’s most disliked video of all time. The YouTube video showed over 500,000 dislikes from users.

The frustration boiled over into a WWE live event on Saturday night, where fans could be heard booing when the same segment was played on the video board.

Even current and former WWE Superstars have taken to social media to stand up for Rhodes.

Wrestler and famous youtuber Logan Paul sent out a post that said “We Want Cody.”

We want Cody.

Rhodes’ older brother, Dustin Rhodes, also took to X to show his support.

I love you @CodyRhodes . You are a light for all of us!! #KeepSteppin

Former WWE women’s wrestler Summer Rae wrote: Imagine handing over your WrestleMania match that you beat 29 other people for…AFTER a two year build. I’m all for twists & turns but make it make sense!”

This whole situation begs several questions:

Is this all just a way to take the focus off the current sex trafficking lawsuit against Vince McMahon? Is the WWE Universe tired of legends returning and taking the spots from people who are wrestling for the company every night?

WWE has yet to respond to any of the backlash over this. The company does plan to hold a press conference on Thursday that will stream live on Peacock at 4 p.m.
