16-Year-Old Fatally Shot in Jacksonville, Suspect Arrested for Manslaughter

On Friday, February 23, 2024, tragedy struck the 1500 block of West 2nd Street in Jacksonville.

Just before 11:30 a.m., the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office received reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers and members of the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department found 16-year-old Layla D. Johnson inside a residence, suffering from a single gunshot wound. Despite efforts to save her, Layla was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office immediately mobilized its Homicide Unit and Crime Scene Unit to investigate the incident. Through a meticulous review of the evidence and interviews conducted by Homicide Detectives, a suspect was identified.

Damon Otto Wilson, a 27-year-old Black male, was detained, interviewed, and subsequently arrested for Manslaughter in connection with Layla’s death.
