Jeffrey A. Sager, 55, has pleaded guilty to assaulting a Veterans Affairs (VA) police officer and now faces up to eight years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled for Sager, who committed the assault at the Lake City VA Medical Center in Lake City, Florida, on February 13, 2024.
According to court documents, Sager entered the facility and immediately locked himself in a triage room. He began verbally harassing a nurse inside the room, prompting the nurse to activate a silent panic alarm. VA police responded to the scene, but Sager refused to follow their orders and continued to barricade himself inside the room. When officers forced their way inside, Sager fled down the hallway of the medical center.
An officer managed to catch up with Sager, but he resisted arrest, and the two fell to the floor. In an attempt to escape, Sager kicked the officer in the shoulder, dislocating it and causing a fracture. Other officers arrived shortly thereafter and took Sager into custody.
The case was investigated by the Lake City VA police and the Osceola National Forest Service. It is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Brenna Falzetta.
