Sex Offender Suspect Arrested After Violent Struggle and Lake Pursuit in Lakeland

A foot pursuit in Lakeland on Thursday, January 9, 2025, led to the arrest of 53-year-old Curtis Novell Young, who was wanted for failing to follow sex offender registration requirements. The incident began at approximately 2:46 PM near the 700-Block of North Lorri Avenue when deputies attempted to speak with Young, and he physically assaulted one of the deputies. During the altercation, Young managed to rip a firearm from the deputy’s holster before fleeing on foot.

Young jumped into Lake Bonnet, attempting to evade capture, but was located about 50-75 yards offshore by the PCSO Marine Unit. After a thorough search, he was arrested around 4:30 PM. Young faces charges related to the assault on deputies and the foot pursuit, with further investigation underway.

Young’s criminal history includes previous arrests for lewd and lascivious battery, aggravated assault, kidnapping, fraud, and other offenses. He is currently in custody, and additional charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.

“This violent and dangerous suspect wasn’t going to escape after assaulting my deputy. He was quickly apprehended and my detectives will thoroughly investigate the incident to file all appropriate charges. Also, I don’t recommend jumping in a lake in this weather… Even if you’re trying to run from law enforcement. You’ll just end up going to jail cold and wet,” said Sheriff Grady Judd.
