St. Petersburg Woman Pleads Guilty in Hit-and-Run Involving Police Officer

On April 30th, 2025, 25-year-old Mackenzie Paige Deaton pled guilty to leaving the scene of a crash involving serious bodily injury and a violation of the Move Over Act.

The incident occurred around 1 a.m. on January 6th, 2024, when a St. Petersburg Police Officer was conducting a traffic stop on I-375. While the officer was exiting his vehicle, a white Kia sedan struck the police vehicle, injuring the officer, and fled the scene.

Deaton was later arrested and charged. In addition to the felony charge, she was also cited for failure to follow the Move Over Law.

The Move Over Law requires drivers to move over one lane when approaching emergency responders, disabled vehicles, or utility workers on the roadside, if it is safe to do so. If changing lanes is not possible, drivers must reduce their speed to at least 20 mph below the posted speed limit.
