Jacksonville Man Indicted in Sexual Battery and Murder of Woman Found During Welfare Check

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A 47-year-old man has been booked into the Duval County jail months after being indicted in the sexual assault and killing of a woman found dead inside her apartment earlier this year.

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, officers responded on Jan. 23 to conduct a welfare check at an apartment on Sunbeam Road near San Jose Boulevard.

When District 3 patrol officers entered the apartment, they found a woman who had been attacked. She was pronounced dead at the residence.

Detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit launched an investigation and, using evidence collected during the case, identified Raymond Jackson Jr. as the suspect.

Just days after the homicide, the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office took Jackson into custody after authorities said he led Jacksonville officers and Nassau County deputies on a vehicle pursuit.

On May 21, a grand jury indicted Jackson on charges of:

  • Murder
  • Sexual Battery
  • Burglary with Assault or Battery

Authorities said Jackson was transported from the Florida Department of Corrections to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office jail on Monday, June 29, and was formally arrested on the indictment the following day.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains focused on seeking justice for the victim and her family.
