A Duval County jury has found Quamaine Smith guilty of Armed Robbery, a conviction that could lead to a life sentence in Florida State Prison. The Honorable Anthony Salem will formally sentence Smith at a later date.
The charges stem from an incident on January 18, 2020, when Smith and two accomplices, all armed with firearms, robbed a victim of their cell phone, jewelry, wallet, and clothing at an Old Kings Road apartment complex. The trio then entered a getaway car driven by a fourth woman.
Responding officers spotted the group driving away and attempted a traffic stop. The driver sped off, initiating a police chase that ended when the vehicle crashed on Powers Avenue. All four occupants, including Smith, fled on foot. Officers apprehended two women, while two K9 units located Smith and his co-defendant, who were then taken into custody. The victim’s cell phone and other belongings were found on two of the co-defendants, and the victim’s identification was recovered from the getaway car.
One of Smith’s co-defendants previously pleaded guilty and received a 10-year prison sentence. The cases against the remaining two co-defendants are still open.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Todd Conklin Jr. and Andrew Szatkowski.
