BUNNELL, Fla. – An Ormond Beach man accused of severely injuring a domestic violence victim and then attempting to interfere with the investigation has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.
William Powers, 35, pleaded no contest Aug. 20 to charges stemming from two arrests in April. At a Sept. 8 sentencing hearing, Circuit Judge Dawn Nichols adjudicated Powers guilty on each count and sentenced him to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years of probation.
The case began April 2, when Flagler County deputies responded to a domestic disturbance. Investigators said Powers slammed the victim’s head into the ground, causing a skull fracture and brain bleed.
The injury was initially reported as the result of a fall. An investigation by the FCSO Major Case Unit, however, determined Powers had tampered with the victim and instructed the victim to give a false account to law enforcement, according to the sheriff’s office.
Powers was arrested on a felony battery charge and additionally charged with tampering with a victim.
After Powers posted bond, investigators said he continued contacting and monitoring the victim despite a court-ordered no-contact condition.
Over approximately two weeks, Powers repeatedly sent text messages to the victim, contacted the victim’s relatives and friends and attempted to establish surveillance of the victim’s home, according to FCSO.
Detectives arrested Powers again April 17 on charges of aggravated stalking and violating pretrial release conditions. His bond on the original felony battery charge was also revoked.
Powers remained at the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility following his sentencing and is awaiting transfer to the Florida Department of Corrections.
