Marion County Fire Lieutenant Saves Woman from Burning Wreck in Heroic Act After Collision

On December 11, 2024, at approximately 10:59 a.m., Marion County Fire Rescue (MCFR) responded to a head-on collision at the intersection of Northwest 84th Court and North US Highway 27 in Ocala. 911 callers reported both vehicles were engulfed in flames with occupants trapped inside.

Unbeknownst to the dispatchers, MCFR Lieutenant Cody Murphy was directly involved in the crash. While driving his personal vehicle home, Lieutenant Murphy found himself caught in the collision. Despite sustaining injuries, Murphy managed to self-extricate from his vehicle.

With quick thinking and bravery, Lieutenant Murphy turned his attention to the trapped driver, a young woman, and used his firefighter and paramedic training to pull her from the wreckage, saving her from the burning vehicle. After removing her from the car, he provided critical trauma care to stabilize her injuries.

MCFR Firefighter Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after and declared a “Trauma Alert,” transporting the woman to a local trauma hospital. Firefighters extinguished the fires in the vehicles. Lieutenant Murphy, who was also injured, sought treatment for his injuries after the rescue.

Lieutenant Murphy’s heroic actions in the face of extreme danger saved a life and highlighted the dedication of Marion County Fire Rescue personnel.
