A tense standoff unfolded Saturday morning in the parking lot of a Gainesville Walmart after a suspect barricaded themselves inside a trailer and fired shots, prompting a large police response.
At approximately 7:50 a.m., Gainesville Police Department (GPD) officers were dispatched to Walmart at 2900 SW 42nd St. following reports of suspicious activity and gunfire coming from a trailer or vehicle in the parking lot. Upon arrival, officers established a perimeter around the trailer and store, evacuating Walmart and nearby businesses as a precaution.
The GPD SWAT team and Negotiations Team engaged with the barricaded subject, while confirming that shots had been fired from inside the trailer. No injuries have been reported, and the situation remains contained.
Authorities are urging the public to avoid the area until further notice. Gainesville Police have expressed gratitude for the assistance of the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ASO), the University of Florida Police Department (UPD), Gainesville Fire Rescue (GFR), and Alachua County Fire Rescue (ACFR).
