On Thursday, June 12, 2025, at approximately 7:22 p.m., detention deputies at the Columbia County Jail discovered an inmate unresponsive and in medical distress during routine cell checks.
Deputies immediately initiated life-saving measures until Columbia County Fire personnel arrived and continued CPR. Columbia EMS later transported the inmate to a local hospital. Despite the efforts, the inmate was pronounced deceased at 8:18 p.m. by medical staff.
Preliminary findings do not indicate foul play. Due to the nature of the incident, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) has taken over the investigation.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the inmate’s family.
