JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 36-year-old Jacksonville woman has been charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of another woman outside a convenience store last week, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
District 5 Patrol officers responded to a reported stabbing on July 23 and found 41-year-old Yolanda Haynes suffering from severe injuries.
Officers and emergency personnel attempted to save Haynes’ life before she was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Investigators quickly identified 36-year-old Brittany Nicole McLean as the suspected attacker and took her into custody. She was initially charged with aggravated battery and tampering with evidence while detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Homicide Unit continued their investigation.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, detectives developed additional evidence through McLean’s statement, witness interviews and physical evidence collected during the investigation.
Based on that evidence, detectives established probable cause to charge McLean with murder.
On July 24, McLean was formally arrested on the murder charge. She remains in the Duval County Jail awaiting her first court appearance.
“Our hearts are with Yolanda Haynes’ loved ones as they grieve her tragic loss, and we will continue to seek justice for her,” the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
