Joshua Abercrombie

St. Petersburg Rapist Captured in Illinois; Investigators Seek Additional Victims in Tampa Bay Area

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. 0 Detectives from the St. Petersburg Police Department traveled to Illinois to apprehend a suspect in a sexual assault case, and authorities now believe there may be more victims in the local Bay Area who have not yet reported incidents.

21-year-old Joshua Abercrombie was taken into custody on January 29, 2026, in Will County, Illinois, on an active arrest warrant originating from St. Petersburg. He faces charges of sexual battery in connection with an alleged assault that occurred during a date late in November 2025.

According to police, Abercrombie met the victim through a social media app, and the two agreed to meet in person. During the encounter, investigators say he became aggressive, sexually assaulting the woman and choking her repeatedly.

The investigation led detectives out of state, culminating in Abercrombie’s arrest. He is currently in custody pending extradition or further proceedings.

St. Petersburg Police emphasize that this may not be an isolated incident. Detectives suspect additional individuals in the Tampa Bay region could have had similar encounters with Abercrombie and are encouraging anyone with relevant information—or who believes they may have been victimized under comparable circumstances—to come forward.
