By Lynn Jones-Turpin – As hurricane season approaches, everyone is “all in” when it comes to protecting and informing citizens of Jacksonville. With citizens constantly moving throughout the city, many resident may not be aware of their evacuation zones, or how to conserve energy and save money during the summer months. To ensure that local journalists are equipped with the proper knowledge and pertinent information for their audiences, the Northeast Florida National Association of Black Journalist (NEFLNABJ) chapter members were invited to meet inside the Jacksonville Electric Authority (JEA) located downtown on Pearl Street.
JEA media and hurricane preparedness teams hosted the gathering with JEA leaders from media relations, electric and project outreach departments discussing how JEA works to keep the community informed before, during and after storms. “We were pleased to host NABJ and allow journalists to get a better idea on JEA’s community outreach efforts and all that goes on behind the scenes before, during and after a storm,” said JEA media rep Karen McAllister. Media reps took notes on how to assess hurricane damage, prioritizing circuit’s restoration and managing summer utility costs.
