By Peggy Spencer – With love and honor, the congregants, family, fellow ministers and friends of the Northside Church of Christ engaged in a week of excitement and celebration of Minister/Elder Charlie McClendon and wife Ida as they culminated their 50 year anniversary of pastoral leadership.
The weeks theme was “Honor to Whom Honor Is Due,” Romans 13:7. Held September 17th-24th, activities emphasized the 50 years of the couples faithfulness, sacrifice and vision for the church. Included in the activities were the unveiling and renaming of the family life center in honor of C.E. McClendon, sermons from guest ministers including former Jaguar Leroy Butler, a catered dinner with local faith leaders and a family night of games and trivia based on the McClendon’s 50 years of dedicated service, a songfest of guest artists and the Mass Chorus of Northside.
The week of excitement and celebration culminated with an elegant black tie gala hosted at the Marriott Southbank Hotel. The Gala began with a processional of the honoree’s family and leadership of Elders and Deacons making their grand entrance. The entourage was followed by Minister McClendon and wife who were met with a standing ovation of thunderous applause.
The gala’s program also included excerpts of the numerous letters of congratulations and well wishes from national, state and local elected officials, offerings of gifts, cards and visual presentations. The world renown Total Praise Ensemble serenaded the McClendons with a song written especially for the occasion. For more visit www.nscocjax.com.
