Local plant sales this weekend

The cooler weather this week makes for a great time to get back in the garden and several plant sales will be happening this weekend to help you along.

This is a great time to plant cool-season vegetables, flowers, herbs, trees, and shrubs. Some cool-season vegetables you may want to consider are beets, onions, spinach, and lettuce. For a little color in the yard, mums do well along with other cold weather annuals like Dianthus, pansy, petunia, or snapdragons.

Knowing the right plant and the right time to dig is an important first step to growing success and an expert master gardener can help you.

The Duval County Extension Office is having a gardening demonstration this Saturday, October 21, from 9 – 11 am. The program will help answer questions and show you what crops to start in the fall, and which ones are especially cost-effective. The fee is $5 and you will want to register here.

In St. Johns County you can stop by the Extension Office just south of the Outlets west of I-95 for their twice a year sale. The Fall sale has well-priced carefully tended plants that help raise funds for the Master Gardener volunteers.

The plants are grown on the Facility in the same environment that homeowners have, so the plants have a very high rate of survival. The mature plants can be purchased on Friday and Saturday, October 20-21 from 9 am to 2 pm.

Kanapaha Botanical Gardens in Gainesville is holding its Open House & Fall Plant Sale in conjunction with the Gainesville Orchid Society.

Admission to the botanical gardens is waived and guests can view the grounds with approximately 50 booths set up selling a wide variety of plants. The American Orchid Society will have its annual American Orchid Society’s judged show that will coincide with the Fall Plant Sale and will take place inside Kanapaha’s entrance building.

Temperatures all week will stay in the 70s including this weekend with upcoming sunny skies. Friday will be our one and best chance for rain this week.
