Basketball Bounces Back to Jax With 95ers

By Lynn Jones | Making a scene on the scene on the front lawn of the Jacksonville Free Press northside office, Duval’s newest sports asset is ready to shoot their shot on the First Coast!

Joining the ranks is the newest professional basketball franchise – the 95ers, just one level below the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) minor league organization.

Led by former Jacksonville Giants head coach Kevin Waters, their first season begins March of 2024 at Jacksonville University with the chance for players to  represent Duval pride.

The lucky players are recruited from all over the country. The building of the inaugural team began in Las Vegas where the official TBL Draft took place in February. They also draft players through a network of colleges and free agents. The roster of 12 includes Jacksonville natives: Bernard Nugent, Christian Terrell, Brandon Davis and Aaron Bowen. doesn’t currently have any Jacksonville natives on the squad, they will be doing their part as members of the community.  In addition to two hour practices several days a week, the players will make appearances, practice games and participate in community engagement, Donning colors of navy blue,crimson and yellow their season runs March through June.

“With our partnership and fans we will not only bring evolution to the way players, but train and compete on the court to give a chance for the city’s youth to bridge the gap to obtain knowledge from sports professionals,” said team’s General Manager Dwane Joshua. The Basketball League’s (TBL) team is owned by Evelyn Magley, the first African American woman to own a male profession team. The TBL is a professional basketball league of 40+ teams in the USA and five international teams. Not just for men, there are also cheerleading opportunities for the ladies under the direction of dance ingenue Kezia Rolle.
