Armed carjacking suspect captured in Clay County appears in court

A man accused of an armed carjacking will make his first appearance in Clay County court on Monday.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody around 1:30 p.m. Sunday after a search near the Talisman Drive and Joe Johns Road area, deputies said.

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the stolen car was spotted using the License Plate Reader system, and when deputies responded to Blanding Boulevard, the man ran off, possibly armed with a handgun.

Deputies, Florida Highway Patrol troopers and officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office searched through neighborhoods and a swamp off Joe Johns Road, using drones, tracking teams, the JSO helicopter and K-9s. During the search, they urged residents to stay in their homes and lock their doors.

Investigators said they found the man hiding in 8 feet of water.

Deputies said the man fought with officers, and a K-9 helped take him into custody.

We expect to learn the man’s identity when he appears in Clay County court on Monday.
