Severe weather: Government office, other closures in Northeast Florida, Southeast Georgia

Severe weather anticipated Tuesday, including the potential for heavy downpours, tornadoes and small hail, led government and other offices around the area to announce closures for the day.

Here’s the current list by county:

Duval County

All city of Jacksonville government offices are closed to the public on Tuesday, along with city parks and recreation facilities. The City Council meeting scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday has been postponed to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The Duval County Courthouse and all Duval County Clerk of Courts offices are closed Tuesday. This includes both the Duval County Courthouse and the Clerk’s beaches branch at 1543 Atlantic Blvd.

All Jacksonville library locations are closed Tuesday. Decisions to extend closures of some or all locations will be made if needed following the storm.

MOCA Jacksonville is closed Tuesday. Unless otherwise noted, the museum plans to reopen Wednesday.

The Clara White Mission daily feeding program is suspended Tuesday and its offices are closed. Staff will be on site to secure the building and ensure the veterans living at the Mission are safe and have provisions. There are 23 men living in the CWM transitional housing program for homeless veterans. Eartha’s Farm & Market is also closed Tuesday. Volunteers who have signed up for activities at both the farm and the Mission are asked to reschedule.

St. Johns County

St. Johns County will not collect yard waste Tuesday, allowing service providers to focus on quickly completing garbage and recycling collection. St. Johns County asks residents to secure or bring inside trash and recycling bins as soon as possible after collection is completed. Residents who would have had their yard waste collected on Tuesday can bring it to the Tillman Ridge or Stratton Road Transfer Stations free of charge.

Following the wind event, residents are asked to follow the Yard Waste Collection Guidelines available at https://www.sjcfl.us/SolidWaste/YardWaste.aspx to ensure efficient yard waste collection in the coming days.

The regularly scheduled city of St. Augustine Code Enforcement, Adjustments and Appeals Board meeting at 3 p.m. Tuesday, has been canceled. All items on the agenda will be postponed and heard at the regularly scheduled meeting in February.

Georgia

All health departments, district offices, CARE clinics, and COVID testing sites in the 8-county Coastal Health District will close at noon on Tuesday. This includes the health departments and district offices in Bryan, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Glynn, Liberty, Long, and McIntosh counties.

Camden County government offices are closed on Tuesday. Offices will re-open with regular hours on Wednesday.

Fort Frederica National Monument on St. Simons Island will close visitor facilities and grounds Tuesday.

The Cumberland Island National Seashore in St. Marys is closed to the public and a mandatory evacuation is in place. All campers, visitors, staff, and volunteers must be off the island Tuesday. The park will remain closed through Tuesday and will reopen on Wednesday. The ferry service will resume on Thursday. The managed hunt schedule for Jan. 9-11, 2024, has been canceled due to severe weather.
