An arrest has been made in the December 2023 murder of Derek M. Pitts.
On December 29, 2023, just after 11:30 p.m., as Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) responded to reports of a shooting in the 10200 block of Old St. Augustine Road.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered 16-year-old Derek M. Pitts lying on the ground in the parking lot of an apartment complex, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the efforts of Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department personnel, Pitts was pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.
In response to the incident, JSO’s Homicide and Crime Scene Units initiated investigations. During their probe, detectives received numerous tips from First Coast Crime Stoppers, which proved instrumental in identifying a suspect. Following up on these leads, authorities zeroed in on Colton G. Moore, a 19-year-old white male.
On Friday, February 23, 2024, Moore, who was already detained at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility on unrelated charges, was formally arrested and charged with Murder.
