On August 15, 2024, POPD was notified by the Daytona Beach Shores Department of Public Safety of an active incident they were investigating of a sexual battery of a 16-year-old at a beachside motel. Further investigation led to identifying multiple locations in Port Orange where additional incidents had also taken place.
It was discovered that Derek Simpson, 41 of Brooksville, FL traveled to Port Orange over several months after meeting, at the time, the 15-year-old victim, over the internet.
Simpson was initially arrested the DBSDPS and later posted a $50,000 bond. Another arrest warrant was obtained by POPD detectives, and with the assistance of the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office, Simpson was arrested Sunday, September 1st, and booked back into the Hernando County Detention Center.
