Arrest Made in May 2024 Shooting on I-295 in Jacksonville

On Saturday, May 18, 2024, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) responded to a report of a vehicle off the roadway at the Interstate 295 and Interstate 10 interchange. Officers found the vehicle with the driver, Derrick Byron Nicholls, a white 22-year-old male, suffering from a gunshot wound. Nicholls was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced deceased.

JSO’s Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit, and the State Attorney’s Office were called to the scene to conduct their investigations. Evidence collected led to the identification of 24-year-old Santos Saleem Herring as a suspect. Herring, already incarcerated at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility on unrelated charges, was served with an arrest warrant for Second-Degree Murder.
