Jacksonville Police Officer Arrested for Battery and False Imprisonment

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) announced the arrest of Patrol Officer John Burgos on charges of battery and false imprisonment. The arrest occurred on the afternoon of October 30, 2024, while Burgos was on duty.

Burgos, who has been with JSO for over six years, was dispatched to a call for service where he met with a crime victim. Specific details regarding the nature of the service call have not been disclosed to protect the victim’s privacy. Following the initial investigation, Burgos returned to the scene, claiming to conduct further inquiries.

While alone with the victim, Burgos allegedly restricted their ability to leave and made unwanted physical contact without valid consent. After the encounter, the victim reported Burgos’s actions to JSO, prompting an immediate investigation by the agency’s Integrity Unit.

As a result of the investigation, Burgos has been stripped of all police authority and suspended without pay. JSO indicated that, although due process will be followed, the agency intends to terminate Burgos’s employment. This incident marks the 11th arrest of a JSO employee in 2024.

JSO Director of Personnel and Professional Standards Brian Kee emphasized the agency’s commitment to upholding the law, stating, “No one is above the law, and this agency will continue to hold officers to the highest of standards.” The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
