In the courtroom of Judge Cary F. Rada, a jury found Dayzha Duncan, 28, guilty on charges of Battery, Burglary of a Dwelling, Petit Theft, and Assault, leading to a 10-year prison sentence. Duncan’s conviction follows her arrest in March 2022 after Leesburg Police Department’s investigation into a reported battery.
The case began when the victim contacted police, claiming Duncan had forcefully entered their home and physically attacked them. The victim recounted hearing a knock at the door and, upon answering, was pushed back as Duncan and another individual entered. Duncan then allegedly assaulted the victim, striking them, pulling them to the floor, and kicking them in the stomach. During the altercation, she also reportedly stole a gold necklace the victim was wearing before leaving the residence.
The victim, who was familiar with Duncan from a prior conflict, shared that Duncan’s accomplice recorded the attack on video. The victim obtained a copy of this recording and provided it to law enforcement, which corroborated their account. Senior Detective Abston reviewed the evidence and obtained an arrest warrant, leading to Duncan’s apprehension in Georgia.
During sentencing, Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney Bill Gladson condemned the attack, stating, “The defendant’s actions were nothing short of reprehensible… Despite going through this horrifying ordeal, the victim was adept enough to relay crucial information to officials, which led to the defendant’s arrest and successful prosecution of this case.”
The case was prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Rachel Jones and Chelsey Omega.
