Jacksonville Officers Shoot Armed Suspect at Popeyes Following Mother’s Confrontation Over Teen Relationship

Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief of Investigations Alan Parker detailed an officer-involved shooting that occurred early Monday morning outside a Popeyes on McDuff Avenue, involving an 18-year-old suspect and Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Officer Robinson, a seven-year department veteran.

The incident began when the mother of a 13-year-old girl discovered that her daughter was in a texting relationship with the suspect, identified as Cerry Banks. Posing as her daughter, the mother arranged to meet Banks at the Popeyes to confront him. When Banks arrived and saw the mother and her children, he brandished a firearm, warning her, “When you hear the shots tonight, you know what’s up.” The mother retreated inside the restaurant with her children and called 911, reporting the aggravated assault.

JSO officers quickly responded to the scene. Banks, who had not left the area, was spotted standing near the business. Officer Robinson issued several commands for Banks to show his hands, but Banks fled behind the restaurant. As Robinson followed, he observed Banks pull a pistol from his waistband and issued multiple commands for him to drop the weapon. When Banks did not comply, Robinson fired, striking Banks, who continued running and eventually dropped the firearm near a neighboring business.

Banks was later apprehended with assistance from a K-9 unit and transported to a local hospital in stable condition. This incident marks the seventh officer-involved shooting for JSO this year. The sheriff’s office has committed to releasing body-worn camera footage and additional details within 21 days in a Critical Incident Briefing.
