The City of Jacksonville has launched its 2024 Get Covered Jax! campaign, aiming to provide health insurance access to the city’s uninsured residents. The initiative, first introduced in 2023 by Mayor Donna Deegan and healthcare leaders, seeks to simplify the process of enrolling in private healthcare plans.
Building on the success of its inaugural year, which reduced the number of uninsured citizens in Duval County by 34%, the campaign will run from November 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025. During this period, eligible individuals can enroll in a healthcare plan through the Florida Health Insurance Marketplace.
Mayor Deegan emphasized the importance of ensuring every Jacksonville resident has access to quality healthcare. “One of the top priorities of my administration is building a healthier city and making sure every resident has access to quality health care,” said Deegan. “Thanks to Get Covered Jax, thousands of Jacksonville families now have coverage that provides peace of mind, preventive care, and protection from life-altering medical debt.”
Currently, approximately 86,274 adults between the ages of 19 and 65 in Duval County remain uninsured, representing about 14.2% of that population. Dr. Sunil Joshi, Chief Health Officer for the City of Jacksonville, highlighted that there are affordable or no-cost options for eligible individuals, regardless of income. The campaign aims to raise awareness about the benefits of insurance, eligibility, and coverage options while providing assistance with navigating the Marketplace.
In an effort to engage the community, the City has partnered with faith-based leaders, healthcare providers, and local media to promote the initiative. On November 12, the City will also host a phone bank in collaboration with WJXT-TV from 12-7pm to assist residents with enrollment questions.
