Jacksonville Launches Tree Planting Initiative at Bus Stops to Boost Shade and Beautify City

On Friday, November 15, 2024, the City of Jacksonville and Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) began a partnership to plant trees at bus stops across the city. This initiative aims to provide shade for transit riders, beautify the urban landscape, and promote community health.

This marks the first phase of a series of tree plantings supported by the Jacksonville Tree Commission. Future planting phases will be coordinated by the City’s Office of Resilience, the Department of Public Works, and JTA.

“Trees are infrastructure, and today represents an important investment in Jacksonville’s green infrastructure,” said Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan, who also revealed that the city is working on its first-ever Urban Forest Management Plan. This comprehensive plan, set to be developed over the next 15 months, will guide future tree planting and maintenance efforts, enhancing the city’s tree canopy.

The initiative is expected to improve Jacksonville’s resilience by reducing extreme heat, managing rainfall flooding, and improving air quality. For further information about the city’s urban forest and tree planting plans, visit Jacksonville.gov – Tree Planting Dashboard..
