Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Begins Enforcement of Public Camping Ban

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has started enforcing a new law prohibiting unauthorized public camping and sleeping. Following a month-long warning period that began October 1, enforcement officially commenced on November 1.

Enforcement Statistics:

  • Arrests: 23
  • Notices to Appear: 17
• Since October 1:
  • Warnings issued: 309

Each individual was warned before enforcement actions were taken.

JSO emphasized its commitment to enforcing the law in compliance with Florida statutes and local ordinances while also working to connect individuals with resources.

Collaborative Efforts:

The agency is partnering with the City of Jacksonville, Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department, non-profits, and shelters to assist affected individuals. Key initiatives include the Homeward Bound program, which offers bus tickets home and connects people to local support. Since October 1, the program has helped 42 individuals, contributing to a total of 240 this year.
