Orlando International Airport Prepares for 1.9 Million Thanksgiving Travelers

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is gearing up to accommodate more than 1.9 million passengers during the Thanksgiving holiday travel period, spanning from November 22 to December 3, 2024. The airport anticipates a bustling season, despite a slight decline in traffic compared to 2023, which saw record-breaking passenger volume.

“Our airport staff, security partners, and vendors are energized by the challenge of this year’s expected holiday surge,” said Kevin J. Thibault, CEO of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority.

The projected figures surpass the 2022 total of 1.75 million travelers, reflecting Central Florida’s ongoing popularity among holiday tourists. December 1, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, is expected to be the busiest day, with an estimated 181,688 passengers arriving and departing.

Parking and Travel Preparations

To ensure smoother travel, MCO officials are encouraging passengers to follow the 3-2-1 rule:

  • 3 hours before departure at the ticket counter.
  • 2 hours before at security checkpoints.
  • 1 hour before at the gate.

Parking will be limited, despite the availability of surface lots named Atlantis, Endeavour, and Discovery, as well as Overflow and garage spaces. Travelers are encouraged to use the Reserved Parking program, accessible via the Orlando MCO app, and consider rideshare or drop-off services to avoid parking challenges.

Holiday Travel Tips

MCO issued additional tips for passengers:

  • Arrive with patience, as large crowds may cause delays.
  • Download the Orlando MCO app for real-time updates on parking and other services.
  • Use free cell phone waiting areas for pickups instead of parking on airport roadways.
  • Check all luggage for prohibited items before arriving.
  • Keep pets on leashes during TSA screenings.
