Daytona Beach Man Arrested for Shooting Dog After Aggression Incident

On Friday, November 29, 2024, Daytona Beach Police responded to a call at 884 S Nova Rd regarding a dog that had allegedly been shot by its owner. Upon arrival, officers made contact with 21-year-old Douglas Everett Matney, who admitted to shooting his 2-year-old pit bull mix, named Zola, after the dog reportedly became aggressive toward him.

Matney had not sought any medical treatment for the injured animal. Officers discovered Zola lying in a bedroom, covered with a urine-soaked blanket. A gunshot wound near her right cheek was visible, consistent with the reported shooting.

Matney was arrested at the scene and charged with Animal Cruelty. He has since posted bail in the amount of $5,000.

Zola, though unable to walk due to her injuries, is in stable condition and expected to survive.
