On December 13, 2024, the City of Jacksonville held a ceremony to honor 28 employees for earning their Lean Initiative Green Belt certifications. The program, launched in June with support from GuideWell, focuses on improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of city government operations.
The Lean Initiative aims to streamline processes, eliminate waste, and deliver better value to citizens and businesses. Since its implementation, the program has reduced 112,000 hours of waste in process improvements.
“By eliminating unnecessary tasks, City employees will focus on higher-value work, leading to increased job satisfaction and retention rates, and just as importantly, better service for our constituents,” said Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan. “Identifying waste and inefficiencies will not only improve the quality of the services we provide, but it will also lead to significant cost savings for the City over time. These savings can then be reinvested in vital services such as infrastructure, health, affordable housing, homelessness, and small businesses.”
The program’s improvements include reduced wait times for permits, licenses, and public services, as well as faster issue resolutions.
Wanyonyi Kendrick, Jacksonville’s Chief of Information Technology, highlighted the city’s Waste Warriors Dashboard as a tool to track progress through metrics and data analysis. The dashboard, along with other transparency resources, is available at Jacksonville.gov – Transparency Dashboards.
As the program continues, the City plans to expand Lean Initiative efforts to more departments and refine processes to achieve ongoing efficiency and innovation.
