Polk County Deputy Found Dead in Davenport Home; Possible Suicide

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of 32-year-old Gregory Maynard, a deputy with the department, who was found with a gunshot wound in his Davenport home late Sunday.

Deputies responded to Maynard’s residence at approximately 10:08 p.m. on December 15, 2024. Upon arrival, Maynard was found in his bedroom with a single gunshot wound to his head. An adult woman and a child were present at the home at the time but did not witness the shooting.

Preliminary evidence from the scene and initial interviews suggest Maynard died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The official cause and manner of death will be determined by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Deputy Maynard, who was not married and had no dependents, joined the Polk County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy in 2015 and became a dual-certified deputy sheriff in January 2017. He was most recently assigned to the Central District patrol.

“Deputy Maynard’s death is such a tragedy. Our thoughts, prayers, and support are with his family, friends, and coworkers,” said Sheriff Grady Judd. “We are making sure Greg’s coworkers have access to both peer and professional counseling. I encourage anyone who may have feelings of self-harm to reach out for help. The investigation remains ongoing.
