Duval County Man Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder in Wife’s Death; Death Penalty Sought

Florida State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that a Duval County jury found Jerry Burns guilty of First-Degree Murder for the 2018 murder-for-hire of his wife, Velvet Burns. The State is seeking the death penalty, and the jury is set to return on December 16 to begin the penalty phase.

Burns was involved in a plot to have his wife killed, which led to her death. Co-defendant Amanda Love, who played a role in the conspiracy, pleaded guilty to Second-Degree Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder in 2019 and was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Another co-defendant, Stephen Hand, also pleaded guilty to First-Degree Murder in 2022 and is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole.

The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Alan Mizrahi, Christina Stifler, and Brittany Johnson.
