74-Year-Old Inmate Dies After Medical Episode at Charlotte County Jail

On the evening of December 26, 2024, 74-year-old Jack Plank, an inmate at the Charlotte County Jail, passed away following a medical episode.

Mr. Plank, who had a known medical condition, had been in custody since December 6, when he was arrested following a domestic incident. During his stay, he was treated both in-house and at a local hospital on multiple occasions. Due to his health concerns, he was housed in the infirmary and checked on every 30 minutes by jail staff.

A corrections deputy discovered Mr. Plank on the floor and immediately called for assistance. Life-saving efforts were made by deputies, jail medical staff, and EMS, but Mr. Plank was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office Major Case Unit conducted an investigation and determined that no foul play was involved. The Medical Examiner’s Office responded and will perform an autopsy.

Sheriff Bill Prummell issued a statement offering condolences, saying, “This is an unfortunate situation, and my heart goes out to all who knew Mr. Plank. Being in jail did not make him any less of a human being, with loved ones, friends, and family that will miss him. I thank my team for their quick actions in trying to save him, even though his condition was ultimately too severe. May he rest in peace.”
