Hamilton County Bids Farewell to Florida’s Longest-Serving Sheriff, Welcomes New Leadership

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has announced the retirement of Sheriff J. Harrell Reid, Florida’s longest-serving sheriff. Sheriff Reid, who has held the position since 1988, served the citizens of Hamilton County for an impressive 36 years, being re-elected eight consecutive times.

Reid’s tenure began in 1988, with re-elections following in 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. From 2013 to 2024, he also held the esteemed position of Dean of the Florida Sheriffs. Known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his community, Reid made himself available to both Hamilton County residents and his staff, often at great personal sacrifice.

As Sheriff Reid steps down, the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office extends its deepest gratitude, celebrating his decades of dedication and wishing him well in retirement.

The start of 2025 marks a new chapter for the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office as newly elected Sheriff Brian Creech assumes the role. Sheriff Creech has the full confidence of the agency, which looks forward to his plans for ensuring the safety and service of Hamilton County’s citizens.
