Guatemalan Man Pleads Guilty in Firearms Trafficking Operation Spanning Florida and the Caribbean

United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg announced that Ricardo Fermin Sune-Giron, 34, of Guatemala, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy, firearms trafficking, dealing in firearms without a license, and possessing firearms as an illegal alien. Sune-Giron faces up to 15 years in federal prison for the conspiracy and possession offenses and an additional 5 years for dealing in firearms without a license. A sentencing date has not yet been scheduled.

According to the plea agreement, between 2023 and April 2024, Sune-Giron participated in a transnational firearms trafficking operation. He recruited straw purchasers to illegally buy firearms—including Glocks, rifles, and AK-47s—from licensed dealers across Florida. Sune-Giron and his co-conspirators then smuggled the firearms to countries such as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. During this period, the operation trafficked thousands of firearms, some of which were later linked to crime scenes.

On April 18, 2024, federal agents executed three coordinated search warrants at residences in the Orlando area, including Sune-Giron’s home. There, agents recovered over 50 firearms, ammunition, money counters, and approximately $16,000 in cash. At the time of his arrest, Sune-Giron was living in the United States illegally under an assumed identity.

The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Homeland Security Investigations, with assistance from the United States Postal Inspection Service and the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant United States Attorneys Diego F. Novaes and Noah P. Dorman are prosecuting the case.
