The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is leading the investigation into an officer-involved shooting that occurred on December 11, 2024, in the 300 block of SW 25th Avenue. The incident unfolded at approximately 11:49 a.m. when officers from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department (FLPD) responded to calls from family members reporting that 21-year-old Jalen Moore, a Fort Lauderdale resident, was experiencing a mental health crisis.
Preliminary details revealed that Moore had armed himself with a gun while inside the home with several family members, including an infant. As officers arrived at the scene, Moore exited the home, holding his brother hostage at gunpoint. Despite repeated commands from officers to drop the weapon, Moore ignored their instructions, continuing to threaten his brother and the officers present.
In response to the imminent threat, three officers discharged their firearms to protect Moore’s brother and others at the scene. Moore was struck by gunfire and was immediately given life-saving aid by the officers until Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue (FLFR) arrived. Moore was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. His brother was unharmed.
FDLE is conducting a thorough investigation into the shooting, in accordance with the policy established in February 2017. Additionally, FLPD’s Office of Internal Affairs is reviewing the incident to ensure adherence to department procedures.
The three officers involved—Detective Steven Smith, Officer Jose Lopez, and Officer Daniel Rissone—have been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the investigations, as per department policy.
