Four South Florida residents were sentenced to federal prison for their roles in the distribution of fentanyl and methamphetamine, including incidents resulting in fatal overdoses.
On January 16, Gito St Fort, 35, of West Palm Beach, was sentenced to 320 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to distribution of a controlled substance resulting in death. In December 2023, St Fort sold fentanyl to a victim who fatally overdosed while visiting his parents.
On January 15, Anwar Hazzi, 36, of Sunny Isles Beach, was sentenced to 200 months in prison. Hazzi, who sold over 900 grams of fentanyl and 500 grams of meth between June 2023 and May 2024, concealed the fentanyl within counterfeit oxycodone pills and the meth within counterfeit Adderall pills. Hazzi pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.
Also on January 15, Samantha Yi, 31, of Lake Worth, was sentenced to 288 months in federal prison. Yi and her then-boyfriend, Darnell Julio Mendez, 32, sold fentanyl to the mother of a 10-month-old child who fatally overdosed in March 2022. Mendez, who was sentenced to 360 months in October 2024, was a career criminal involved in the distribution of fentanyl. Both Yi and Mendez pleaded guilty to charges related to the distribution of fentanyl resulting in death.
U.S. Attorney Markenzy Lapointe and DEA Special Agent in Charge Deanne L. Reuter announced the sentences. The DEA Miami Field Division, with assistance from local law enforcement agencies, investigated the cases, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys prosecuted them.
