State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that a Duval County jury found Richard Chase Jr. guilty of Attempted Second-Degree Murder, Attempted Manslaughter with a Weapon, and Domestic Battery. With the verdict, Chase faces up to life in Florida State Prison and will serve a mandatory minimum of 30 years as a Prison Release Reoffender and Habitual Violent Felony Offender. The Honorable Anthony Salem will formally sentence him at a later date.
Just before midnight on September 1, 2023, officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a home on Clearsky Drive after reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found three victims—a mother and her two adult children—suffering from injuries.
Investigators determined that Chase had assaulted the mother earlier in the evening inside her bedroom. The altercation alerted her two adult children, who entered the room to intervene. When they confronted Chase, he pulled out a knife and began stabbing the adult male victim before attacking his sister. The victims managed to escape the house, while Chase fled the scene in a vehicle.
Law enforcement issued an alert for Chase, and he was located and arrested a short time later during a traffic stop.
The case was investigated by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Kelli Shobe and Jessica Russell.
