A 67-year-old man was arrested after allegedly kidnapping a pharmacy employee following a staged traffic incident on Thursday, January 30, 2025.
At 12:55 p.m., officers from the Lake City Police Department responded to Baya Pharmacy, located at 1465 West US Hwy 90, after receiving a report of a kidnapping.
The victim, an employee of the pharmacy, told officers they were driving south on NW Ridgewood Avenue and stopped at the intersection of West US Hwy 90 when they saw a bicyclist attempting to cross. After making eye contact, the cyclist motioned for the driver to proceed but then suddenly moved in front of the vehicle and was struck.
When the driver exited to check on the cyclist and attempted to call law enforcement, the suspect slapped the phone from their hand and threatened violence. The cyclist then forced the driver back into the vehicle, placed his bicycle in the rear, and brandished a knife, ordering the driver to take him to a specific location.
After reaching the location, the suspect exited the vehicle, and the victim drove back to Baya Pharmacy to report the incident.
Detectives identified the suspect as Danny Keith Phelps of Lake City. He was located, arrested, and transported to the Columbia County Detention Center. His bond was set at $150,000.
