On Monday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m., the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office received multiple 911 calls reporting a suspect in a red truck pointing a firearm at passing vehicles on I-95 southbound.
St. Johns County deputies attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect fled, brandishing the firearm at law enforcement officers. While driving recklessly, the suspect crashed south of State Road 16, striking a civilian vehicle. The occupants of the civilian vehicle were evaluated and released at the scene.
Deputies engaged the suspect, with an SJSO K9 assisting in his apprehension. The suspect was airlifted to a trauma center for medical treatment.
The Florida Highway Patrol is assisting with the crash investigation, while SJSO continues to investigate the circumstances leading up to the incident. Southbound lanes of I-95 have since reopened.
