A joint law enforcement operation led to the arrest of a 28-year-old Lake City woman on drug charges after authorities uncovered a plan to smuggle narcotics into Suwannee Correctional Institution.
Jakaleb Thomas, a correctional officer trainee, was taken into custody after task force detectives received intelligence from the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation determined that Thomas was expecting a drug delivery in Lake City, which she intended to transport into the prison.
During the operation, detectives from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and the Gainesville-Alachua County Drug Task Force seized 42 grams of crystal methamphetamine and 211 grams of marijuana from Thomas.
She was arrested and booked into the Columbia County Detention Facility, where she remains held on a $333,000 bond.
The operation involved multiple agencies, including the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office, Gainesville Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol, Lake City Police Department, Florida Department of Corrections Office of Inspector General, and the Drug Enforcement Administration.
