Jacksonville Man Pleads Guilty to Possessing an Illegal Machine Gun

A 19-year-old Jacksonville man has pleaded guilty to illegally possessing a machine gun conversion device, which can turn a semi-automatic Glock pistol into a fully automatic weapon. Andres Felipe Mejia now faces up to 10 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not been set.

According to court records, undercover officers with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) met Mejia on August 13, 2024, to buy a “switch,” a device that modifies a handgun to fire automatically. During the transaction, Mejia explained how to use the device and offered to sell more in the future.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative aimed at reducing gun violence by focusing on enforcement and community trust. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and ATF investigated the case, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Brenna Falzetta is prosecuting.
