Guatemalan Man Sentenced to 14 Years for Gun Trafficking

A Guatemalan man living in the U.S. under a false identity has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison for gun trafficking and related crimes. Ricardo Fermin Sune-Giron (34) was convicted of illegally dealing firearms, trafficking guns, and possessing firearms as an undocumented immigrant. He pleaded guilty in December 2024.

Authorities say that between 2023 and April 2024, Sune-Giron was part of a large-scale gun trafficking operation. He recruited people, known as “straw purchasers,” to illegally buy guns—including Glocks, rifles, and AK-47s—from licensed dealers in Florida. These firearms were then smuggled to countries such as the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Investigators believe over 1,000 firearms were trafficked, some later linked to crime scenes.

On April 18, 2024, federal agents searched three homes in Orlando, including Sune-Giron’s residence. They seized 57 firearms, ammunition, $16,000 in cash, empty gun boxes, and money counters. At the time of his arrest, Sune-Giron was living in the U.S. illegally under a false name.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and prosecuted by federal attorneys. It was part of Operation Take Back America, a national effort to combat illegal immigration, dismantle criminal organizations, and prevent violent crime.
