Jacksonville Couple Charged with Murder After Toddler’s Death Ruled Homicide

A Jacksonville man has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge following the death of a toddler, who was found with multiple injuries and methamphetamine in their system, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).

On September 10, 2024, Jacksonville patrol officers responded to a medical emergency at a home on Taurus Circle North in southwest Jacksonville. The child was rushed to Wolfson Children’s Hospital, where doctors discovered multiple injuries. The child died on September 18, 2024.

Months later, on December 4, the Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide, concluding that the child died from blunt force trauma and had methamphetamine in their system.

Following an extensive investigation, JSO arrested two individuals on March 20, 2025:

  • Zayla Goodwin, 20 – Aggravated Manslaughter of a Child
  • Nathaniel Davis, 23 – First-Degree Murder, Two Counts of Sexual Battery, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Tampering with Evidence (Capital Felony)

A grand jury indicted Davis on a first-degree murder charge this week. Due to the ongoing investigation, authorities have not released additional details.

JSO stated they are working closely with the State Attorney’s Office to pursue the harshest penalties possible. Authorities urge the public to report any suspected child abuse by calling JSO at 904-630-0500 or the state’s child abuse hotline at 1-800-96-ABUSE.
