The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released a statement regarding the in-custody death of Charles Faggart, who was declared brain dead following an incident at the Duval County Jail on April 7th.
The JSO stated that detectives are actively working to fully understand the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. They emphasized that this is an ongoing and dynamic investigation that requires, among other things, the opinion of the Office of the Medical Examiner. The JSO assured the public that it will conduct a thorough, complete, and comprehensive investigation, consistent with its procedures for all death investigations. Detectives have been and will continue to communicate with the Faggart family through their attorney.
While transparency is a priority for the JSO, the agency stressed that this commitment does not take precedence over maintaining the integrity of criminal investigations. Sheriff T.K. Waters will provide answers to the Faggart family once he has them. Following the completion of the criminal case, Sheriff Waters intends to share the details of the death investigation publicly.
As previously announced by Sheriff Waters, the eight corrections officers and the corrections sergeant involved in the April 7th incident have been stripped of their authority pending both the criminal and subsequent administrative investigations.
