Student Arrested at LaBelle High School for Possessing BB Gun

A 17-year-old student at LaBelle High School was arrested this morning, April 15, 2025, after attempting to pass through the school’s weapons detection system with a BB gun and BBs in their backpack.

School staff were alerted by the system and immediately notified the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) School Resource Officer (SRO), who detained the student. A subsequent search of the backpack confirmed the presence of the BB gun and a container of BBs.

Sheriff Steve Whidden emphasized the commitment to school safety, stating, “We intend to continue to strive to ensure a safe school environment for our students. We were immediately able to confirm that at no time was there any direct threat or immediate danger to the students and staff on the LaBelle High School campus.”

The student faces a charge of Possession of Weapon on School Property.
