Duval County Jury Finds Man Guilty of Second-Degree Murder in Roadside Shooting

State Attorney Melissa Nelson announced that a Duval County jury has found Kalvin Gilbert Sr. guilty of Second-Degree Murder. Gilbert now faces a minimum sentence of 25 years up to a lifetime in Florida State Prison. Sentencing by the Honorable Jeb Branham will occur at a later date.

The conviction stems from a shooting on June 23, 2022, when patrol officers responded to East 26th Street and discovered a victim deceased inside a black Chevrolet Impala with multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots and seeing a white pickup truck speeding away, turning onto Franklin Street. Another witness saw a white pickup truck pull alongside the parked black car, heard shots, and saw a muzzle flash originating from the pickup before it sped off.

The ensuing investigation revealed that Gilbert had rented a white Dodge Ram truck on June 16, 2022, and returned it the day after the murder, on June 24, 2022. Forensic evidence confirmed Gilbert was the driver of the rented Dodge Ram truck at the time of the shooting. Authorities also determined that Gilbert and the victim were related and had been involved in a feud in the months preceding the murder.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigated the case, which was successfully prosecuted by Assistant State Attorneys Joseph Licandro and Elizabeth Brown.
