Carlos Fernandez, 23, was found guilty today in Pinellas County Court for his role in a January 2023 incident where the motorcycle he was operating struck and killed 13-year-old Ethan Martin. The boy was crossing 28th Street North at the time.
Fernandez was convicted of vehicular homicide, reckless driving causing serious bodily injury, street racing, and operating a motorcycle without an endorsement.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:35 a.m. on January 29, 2023. Fernandez was driving a black Suzuki motorcycle at a high speed southbound on 28th Street North when he struck Ethan Martin near 109th Avenue North. Ethan Martin died at the scene, while Fernandez was critically injured and transported to a local hospital.
Authorities determined that Fernandez was participating in an illegal street racing event at the time of the crash. Ethan Martin had accompanied his father to the event; his father was not injured.
Fernandez’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. on June 2nd.
