The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) has released initial details and video footage related to an officer-involved shooting that occurred on Sunday, April 20, 2025, on Sandalwood Boulevard. The shooting resulted in the injury of 51-year-old Andreas Wetzel.
According to investigators, a 911 caller reported that Wetzel was armed with a handgun and suicidal. Responding officers located Wetzel seated in the driver’s seat of his vehicle, holding the firearm.
Police issued multiple commands instructing Wetzel to drop the weapon and show his hands. Instead, Wetzel exited the vehicle and fired his gun in the direction of officers. Officers returned fire, striking him. Wetzel fell to the ground and dropped the firearm.
Wetzel was taken into custody and officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to the hospital.
The State Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the shooting to determine whether the officers’ actions were legally justified. Following that review, JSO will perform an internal investigation to evaluate whether the officers acted within departmental policy. The case will then be presented to a Response to Resistance Board, and the findings will be submitted to the Sheriff for final review.
JSO stated that this information is being released in the interest of transparency. The investigation remains active.
